The Story Girl

Cabbage Skirt

green skirt

I just whipped up this skirt in about an hour this morning. It was basically two big rectangles for the bottom part, and then two skinny rectangles for the waistband. This fabric is from Goodwill, I think. There or another thrift store, because it’s definitely thrift store fabric. It’s very stretchy and crinkly, but I don’t think it’s a knit, it’s more like a woven with a bunch of stretch in it. I call it wonky fabric of undisclosed fiber and blend. That works.

waistband

I used a really wide elastic from my elastic stash. Yeah, I have an elastic stash. This was pretty thin, and I think next time it would be better to use a thicker elastic. The thinness of this gives too much when the the waistband is stretched, and folds a bit. This probably could’ve been fixed by making the waistband a bit wider.

hem

Because of the stretchiness of the fabric, and weirdness of it (why did I buy this fabric in the first place? Who knows), I didn’t do a regular hem. Instead, I just serged it with white thread. I haven’t gotten around to changing the color thread yet. I have some navy, and that might have looked better. This skirt is really just a hang out and be comfortable skirt, not a fashionable pretty skirt. And I’m cool with that. Everybody needs a comfy skirt. If it just so happens to be crinkly and bright green so much the better!
