The Pajama Story
So pajamas were not on the to-do list I shared with you a few weeks ago. However, they were in another to-do list in my brain.
With pajamas, I hold onto them until they are threadbare but I draw the line at gaping holes. Unfortunately several pairs recently made it into the rag pile necessitating new pajamas. I think pajamas are one of the easiest things to sew, and therefore the easiest to totally screw up due to over-confidence.

This very nice pair of striped pajamas (I’m wearing them right now) was simple to put together. Yet it wasn’t until after I made buttonholes for the drawstrings, and sewed the whole waistband down that I noticed I made those buttonholes on the side instead of center front. AH! I’ll just call it a stylistic choice. I also sewed wrong side to right side, but that was last night and I ripped out the seam while watching Miss Marple.

The layered bias trim on the bottom of the pant legs is one of my favorite things about the stripey pair. There’s only one pocket on the back, which I cut on the bias for a little flare. My other pair of pajamas are high waters because I didn’t quite have 2 yards of fabric. I picked up the really cute fabric at Cool Cottons during their after Christmas sale. Because they were already short, I just used a bright pink bias binding to finish the pant legs. I put two pockets on the back and used the honeycomb stitch.

I used Butterick 6883, which I bought years and years ago. It was one of my very sewing projects and I was utterly confused by the construction of the pants, mostly due to me sewing the front legs together! With a little patience and attention detail, I finally got it right. It’s a very straightforward pattern, and if you’re looking to make some easy pajama pants, this is a good one.
