Fantastic Yellow

A week ago I was shopping at Mill End, meandering through the isles, not finding anything that really jumped out at me. Some things I liked, but nothing I couldn’t live without. Then I saw this striped yellow fabric hiding amongst the cottons.

It’s layers of fabric sewn on top of a base layer (which I think is at least two layers thick). It’s directional because of the way the stripes are sewn. Plus there was no need to hem because the selvages were already turned under. Whaaat? I immediately grabbed it and got enough for a pencil skirt. That day I cut and sewed the shell…

Oh snap. Do you see what I did? I didn’t notice the stripes when I was cutting out the back and cut it in the opposite direction. I was really frustrated and just left it on my ironing board until the next day. After some consulting with friends, I decided that it’s not really that noticeable unless you are paying really close attention to the stripes. Arg. This often happens when I rush into things. Anyway, I put in the matching yellow lining and called it a day. Now my main problem is thinking of a top to wear with it. It’s for a wedding. Any ideas, friendly readers?

OMG! That is gorgeous. Never mind about the back, you will be the only person who knows that isn’t how it should be. Be prepared for all the compliments, especially if you tell them you made it.
Sorry, I can’t help on what to wear with it but you could probably get away with a plain yellow t-shirt, that skirt is so fabulous!

Such a great skirt! And incredible fabric! Maybe a loose-fitting top in a block colour, black or white or perhaps navy blue? Though I’m sure whatever you choose is gonna look amazing.

Wowzers! This skirt is absolutely gorgeous! Don’t worry about the stripes, if anyone does notice they’ll think you did it on purpose, avant garde-stylee. I’d wear it with a plain or embroidered collar knit in black/yellow/navy/red/cream or with a black or cream pussy bow blouse. Wish it were mine!

Top: Sencha blouse with a keyhole opening made from slightly sparkly champaigne-colored fabric to pick up the stripes on the skirt. :)

Thanks for all the great tips! I’m still not sure what I’m going to go with. The wedding is in a couple of days, so we’ll see. I’ll blog about it when I get back. I’m happy to hear that my little mess-up isn’t as bad as I thought it was :)
